Section 204 – Academic Contests

  1. TAPPS sponsors the following competitions:
    • Advanced Math
    • Calculator Applications
    • Current Issues and Events
    • Duet Acting
    • Lincoln Douglas Debate
    • Literary Criticism
    • Mathematics
    • Number Sense
    • Original Oratory
    • Persuasive Speaking
    • Poetry Interpretation
    • Prose Interpretation
    • Ready Writing
    • Science
    • Social Studies
    • Solo Acting
    • Spanish
    • Spelling
    • Yearbook
  2. ELIGIBILITY. In addition to the eligibility requirements for contests in Article V of the Constitution, only students in grades 9-12 shall be permitted to enter the contests.
  3. REPRESENTATION Each participant member school may enter up to two individual/duets per event.
  4. VERIFICATION PERIOD
    • A 30-minute verification will follow the initial posting of all results. All results will be final at the conclusion of this time period.
    • If it is evident that an error has been made in ranking a contestant’s score, the Meet Director is authorized to correct the error.
    • A speech Verifier will ensure that all procedures and rules have been followed.
    • If questions arise, contact the Classification Speech Coordinator, State Speech Director, or State Academic Director.
  5. USE OF AIDS
    • Translators are not allowed.
    • Irlen lenses, overlays, or colored paper are permitted.
  6. TEST PERSONNEL. (Contest Directors, Monitors, and Assistants must be professional and unbiased.)
    • Contest Director.  Must understand the rules of the contest he is administering.
    •   Proctor.  Assist the Contest Director, monitors students taking exams, maintains silence in the halls, and performs other duties as necessary.
    • Graders.  Competent graders may include coaches who should maintain a professional and unbiased demeanor.
