Jr. High Music

Jr. High Meet Locations and Details 

(As meets are organized, they will be listed here.)


Purpose:

To provide a high quality regional competition for Jr. High Band, Orchestra, and Vocal competition  consistent with the goals and quality of the TAPPS High School Competitions.   

Participants:

Middle school or junior high private schools who presently serve as feeder schools into TAPPS member high schools.

Hosts:

Hosts will be solicited from the music committee and interested parties.  The TAPPS office will assist in organization of the regions, but the local host shall develop schedules, find locations and manage all aspects of the competitions. Preference would be that a TAPPS school or facility with minimal fees

Locations:

Regional competitions following a similar plan to the high school solo and small ensemble contests present opportunities which limit overnight travel.  If you are interested in hosting a Jr. High Invitational meet, please contact Vena at info@tapps.biz.  We are seeking hosts in the following areas.  

  1. Dallas
  2. East Texas
  3. Austin
  4. Houston
  5. West Texas
  6. Panhandle
  7. South Texas

Time Frame:

  1. Dates to be developed by the Regional Hosts.  Proposed dates are as outlined:
  2. Early Spring (End Jan) – Solos, Small Ensembles
  3. Mid-Late Spring (Mid March, Early April)– Large Ensemble
  4. Or dates as set by each region to fit needs of area

Format:

The majority of TAPPS schools are equivalent to UIL 1C schools.  Students may participate in 3 events

  1. Large Ensemble Competition:  
    1. Band – PML Grade 1, Concert March, Director’s Choice
    2. Orchestra – PML Grade 1, Director’s Choice, Director’s Choice
    3. Vocal – PML Grade 1, Director’s Choice, Director’s Choice
    4. One original musical scores required for judge
    5. $150 entry
    6. plaque for 1 division rating
  2. Medium Ensemble  Competition
    1. Percussion Ens – Director’s Choice, Director’s Choice – Part Doubling allowed
    2. Show Choir- Director’s Choice, Director’s Choice
    3. Sacred Choir- Director’s Choice, Director’s Choice
    4. One original musical scores required for judge
    5. $75 entry
    6. plaque for 1 division rating
  1. Solos:
    1. Director’s Choice
    2. Live, tape, or media accompaniment required for vocal
    3. Live, tape, or media accompaniment optional for instrumental
    4. One Original musical score
    5. $10 entry
    6. medal for 1 division rating
  1. Small Ensembles:
    1. Director’s Choice
    2. Duets are allowed
    3. Vocal Maximum: 16 Students
    4. Instrumental Maximum: 1 student per part as required by the music
    5. One Original musical score
    6. $7 per student per entry
    7. medal for 1 division rating

Organization:

  1. Singular statewide membership registration
  2. Online, singular statewide registrations
  3. Payments made to TAPPS
  4. TAPPS hires judges based on registrations
    1. Local hosts makes contacts
    2. TAPPS will ensure timely and correct payments
  5. Local Director sets schedules
  6. TAPPS awards and supplies to regions
    1. TAPPS currently has surplus of previously used medals
    2. TAPPS currently has surplus of old logo based plaques.
  7. Host school to receive a host fee based on the number of entries registered.
