New Extra Point/Field Goal Rule for 2023
Athletic Directors and Football Coaches,
As we enter the first week of games for football the TAPPS Office wanted to take a moment to remind all of our member schools to review changes in football rules as well as TAPPS and UIL exceptions to NCAA football rules. In particular, TAPPS and UIL have adopted a new rule on personal fouls occurring on field goals and extra points. While this rule has not been adopted by the NCAA, it will be enforced in all games involving TAPPS and UIL teams.
51. TAPPS RULE – PERSONAL FOUL ON FIELD GOALS AND TRY ATTEMPTS (Additional rule applicable to TAPPS and UIL games only).
If Team A is in a formation to attempt a place kick (field goal or try) it is illegal for a defensive player to immediately run forward at or just after the snap and initiate contact (indicated by forward movement of the defensive player) with an offensive player within 1 second after the snap. It is not a foul if the defensive player is in a three or four point stance, and is aligned in a stationary position within one yard of his line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped. Incidental or slight contact should be ignored.
PENALTY – 15 yards and automatic first down.
